Qvevri Wine Cellar, Ivane Nareklishvili

The Nareklishvili family has been making wine in Kakheti since 1850, and the year is printed on the label. Today the estate, under the name Qvevri Wine Cellar, is run by Ivane Nareklishvili, whose vineyards and marani are in the village of Velistsikhe in the Gurjaani municipality.

Ivane works the way his great-grandfather taught him: the grapes ferment in qvevri as whole bunches, with stems and skins, and then stay on the skins for months. This gives amber wines from Rkatsiteli, Kakhuri Mtsvane, Kisi, Khikhvi and Kakhuri Mtsvivani, and a red from Saperavi. The bottles are sold in the US, the Czech Republic and Latvia.
